Yacht Prototype
Client Overview: Corgi Art House — a game art production studio — engaged us to create a 3D model of a yacht prototype. This project involved designing a highly detailed and realistic visual representation of the yacht based on blueprints provided by Corgi. The primary requirement was to include a helicopter landing deck, with the ultimate goal of the 3D model being 3D printed and used by their client as a prototype to pitch investors for further development.
Project Objectives:
- Develop a comprehensive 3D model of a yacht with a helicopter landing deck.
- Ensure the model is highly detailed and accurate, suitable for 3D printing.
- Create a realistic visual that aligns with their client’s expectations and requirements.
Approach: We began by analyzing the provided blueprints to gain a thorough understanding of the yacht’s design and structural elements. This initial step was crucial to ensure that every aspect of the yacht was accurately represented in the 3D model.
Modeling and Design:
- Blueprint Analysis: Conducted an in-depth review of the blueprints to accurately interpret the yacht’s dimensions, layout, and structural components.
- 3D Modeling: Used Autodesk Maya to create a detailed 3D model of the yacht. This included designing the hull, deck, superstructure, and, importantly, the helicopter landing deck.
- Texturing: Applied realistic textures to the model using Adobe Substance Painter. The texturing phase involved creating materials for the yacht’s surfaces, including metallic finishes, wood textures, and glass elements.
- Rendering: Utilized Marmoset Tool Bag to render the 3D model. This allowed us to generate photorealistic visuals that accurately represented the yacht’s design.
Helicopter Landing Deck: Special attention was given to the helicopter landing deck, a key feature of the client’s request. We ensured that the landing deck was integrated seamlessly with the yacht’s design and maintained realistic proportions and structural integrity.
Challenges and Solutions:
- Detailing for 3D Printing: One of the primary challenges was ensuring that the model’s details were suitable for 3D printing. This required optimizing the model to balance detail and printability, avoiding overly intricate features that could complicate the printing process.
- Realism in Design: Achieving a high level of realism was essential. We focused on accurate texturing and lighting to create a visual that met the client’s expectations. Regular feedback sessions with the client helped refine the model and ensure alignment with their vision.
Outcome: The final 3D model of the yacht, complete with a helicopter landing deck, exceeded the client’s expectations. The model was highly detailed, realistic, and ready for 3D printing. The client was able to successfully use the 3D model to create a physical prototype of the yacht, which received positive feedback from their clients.
Software Used:
- Autodesk Maya: For comprehensive 3D modeling.
- Marmoset Tool Bag: For rendering and creating photorealistic visuals.
- Adobe Substance Painter: For texturing and material creation.
